Refracting Telescope 2 - Eyepiece Lens

Added by Craig Napier on Dec 15, 2008

This activity explores the function of the small eyepiece lens in a telescope. A simulation involving an object, convex lens and eye, is used to show that the eyepiece in a telescope acts as a magnifying glass and produces a virtual image in the eye.

This item teaches:

  • about the use of converging lenses in magnifying glasses
  • about the use of converging lenses in telescopes
  • about real and virtual images

  • Pupils should understand the nature of a virtual image.
  • Pupils should know that a convex lens used in this way acts as a magnifying glass.
